Previously, Samuan Tiga Temple was known as Gunung Goak Temple. This name is embedded in the temple building because the location of the temple is on the mountain. As is known, in the belief of Balinese Hindus, mountains and hills have a sacred status. Therefore, the Balinese have a tendency to erect temples on hills or mountains.

Subsequently, the name of Gunung Goak Temple was changed to Samuan Tiga Temple after this temple was used as a meeting place for the unification of sects in Bali. At that time, a total of 9 sects were invited. Pura Samuan Tiga was chosen because it was considered to have a strategic location. Moreover, the meeting was an important meeting to be held.

After this meeting ended with a positive decision, the name of Gunung Goak Temple was changed to Samuan Tiga Temple. In Balinese, samuan has the meaning of meeting. This name is used to commemorate the events of the meeting that became the forerunner to the concept of the three heavenly shrine which is an effort to unite Bali.
