Pura Ulun

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Site in the Bedugul Plateau

Balitraveldiary.com – Bedugul is a plateau area on the northernmost side of Tabanan Regency which is the center of Bali tourism. This area is known to have cool air, terraced rice fields, and three large lakes; namely Beratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan. Each of these lakes plays a vital role in people’s lives so that they have a spiritually important position in accordance with Hindu teachings adopted by the Balinese people. For this reason, in each of these lakes, stands a special temple called Ulun Danu Temple. One of the three temples considered to have the most important meaning and long history is Ulun Danu Beratan Temple.

Literally, “pura ulun danu” means to be a temple on a lake and can be described as a temple erected as a place of worship for Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and the gods who preserve a lake. Some palms mentioned that Ulun Danu Beratan Temple became a place of worship to Sang Hyang Widhi in his preacher as the God of Prosperity. This temple also functions as a place of worship of the goddess who resides on Lake Beratan, namely Dewi Laksmi – who is a goddess of fertility and beauty. In addition, the existence of Lake Beratan as a source of water for agricultural irrigation for the surrounding area makes it holds the status of Jagyangan Jagat Temple, which is a public temple where Hindus worship from across regions, classes, and professions.

The function of Ulun Danu Temple as a place of worship is realized by the existence of worship / pelinggih buildings. Among the pelinggih, there are two buildings – namely Palebahan Pura Tengahing Segara and Palebahan Palinggih Lingga Petak / Ulun Danu whose positions are jutting into the middle of the lake. The unique position of these two sacred buildings is rarely found in Ulun Danu temples erected on other lakes in Bali. This makes the two sacred buildings in the middle of Lake Beratan not only have spiritual value but also high beauty value.

Apart from functioning as a place of worship for Hindus from many surrounding areas, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple has indeed become a center of attraction for tourism in Bedugul. The main attraction of this temple complex is none other than Pelinggih Telengin Segara in the form of Meru overlapping 11 and Pelinggih Lingga Ulun Danu in the form of Meru overlapping three. The position and natural panorama surrounding the two sacred buildings make it has a high aesthetic value to be immortalized. This is what drives the local government to perpetuate this Bedugul tourist attraction in the fifty thousand rupiah denomination.
