Balitraveldiary.com – The name Pejeng Village in Gianyar may not be familiar to tourists. Its popularity is far less when compared to popular tourist villages in Bali such as Penglipuran Village or Kertalangu Village. However, this village has a very important historical value in Bali. Moreover, this village is known as the center of government of a large kingdom in ancient Bali.
Pejeng Village has a very long history. The name of this village is known through reports from a naturalist from the Netherlands, namely GE Rumphias. In a report titled Amboinsche Reteitkamer, Rumphias mentioned the name of the village of Pejeng. He also mentioned the existence of bronze drums which became more popularly known as the Pejeng Moon.
The discovery of the Pejeng Moon then becomes the first step to uncover the hidden history of Pejeng Village. Moreover, after further investigation, the Pejeng Moon turned out to be a bronze metal. In fact, the drum was previously considered a meteorite. No one in the local community dared to move him, for fear of disaster.
After going through research, researchers from the Netherlands estimate that Pejeng Village has a central role in the past. Moreover, after further excavations, found a variety of important relics from the ancient Balinese kingdom. These relics were found in various forms, including writing. From here, it is estimated that there was a kingdom in Pejeng in the range between 883 to 1343 AD.
After the discovery of historical objects, the researchers concluded that there was a large kingdom called the Kingdom of Bedulu. The name Pejeng in the era of Ancient Bali is mentioned is Soma Negara. This area is touted as the capital of the Bedulu Kingdom. Because of its location in Pejeng, many also call this kingdom by the name of the Pejeng Kingdom.
However, the name Soma Negara is not a familiar name for the Pejeng community. They are more accustomed to mention the name of the village as Pejeng Village. In fact, for older people born and aged in Pejeng, Soma Negara is the original name of the village. Pejeng, which means umbrella, is pinned because this village is the location of the ancient Balinese king who ruled wisely and covered the people.
For Javanese people, the name Bedulu Kingdom in the village of Pejeng is rarely known. However, for the people of Pejeng Village and Bali, Bedulu is an important kingdom. This kingdom has a crucial role as a kingdom that defends the territory of Bali from the onslaught of the Majapahit Kingdom. This event took place in 1343.
However, the struggle of the warriors from the Kingdom of Bedulu was apparently unable to withstand the might of the Majapahit Kingdom. Moreover, at that time the attack carried out by Majapahit was led directly by Patih Gajah Mada. In the battle, the Bedulu Kingdom reached its final point. The last king who ruled Bedulu was Dalem Makambika who had revolted and was crushed by Gajah Mada in 1347.
Furthermore, the island of Bali became the territory of Majapahit. Gajah Mada then placed a king or palace named Sri Kresna Kepakisan. From this then came the small kingdoms in Bali which are descended from the Kepakisan Dynasty.
