Pura Tirta Empul, Self-purification in Gianyar Bali

This temple, which is more than a thousand years old, is visited by many people, not only Hindus but also tourists, both local and foreign. It seems that many people are interested in participating in purifying themselves in this temple.

This place of worship may indeed be entered by followers of other religions as long as they obey the rules, maintain attitudes, and respect Hindus who are undergoing worship.

The Tirta Empul Temple Complex is located in Manukaya Village, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar Regency, Bali, about 40 km from Denpasar. It is located in a valley just below the Tampak Siring Palace.

Istana Tapak Siring is one of the legacies of Indonesia’s first president, Ir. Sukarno. Until now the Tampak Siring Palace is still functioned as a location for state events.

Not only famous for the existence of a pond that is commonly used for painting activities, Tirta Empul Temple also has a unique architectural design. Moreover, this temple building is very old.

It is estimated that this shrine was built in 962 AD during Chandra Bhayasingha, the fourth king of the Warmadewa Dynasty, in power on the island of Bali. Referring to the Blanjong inscription in Sanur, this temple was founded by Sri Kesari Warmadewa.

Foreign tourists are purifying themselves with springs in Tirta Empul Temple

Literally, Tirta Empul means water coming out of the ground. This relates to the story of the establishment of this temple which is believed by Balinese Hindus. It is said that at that location, Dewa Indra drove a spear into the ground so that the water came out. The water is believed to be sacred and can heal.

Like other temples in Bali, this sacred building has three parts, namely jaba pura (front page), middle jaba (middle page), and innards (inner part). The pool used for traction is located in the middle jaba section. Next to the pond, there is a fish pond.

When entering this holy area, visitors are required to obey the rules. visitors who want to bathe in a spring, are required to change clothes with the fabric that has been provided.

Women who are menstruating are not allowed to enter. There are also rules for tying hair, both for men and women. The caretaker of the temple provides rubber to make it easier for visitors to tidy up their hair.

Furthermore, visitors who want to paint in the holy spring are encouraged to wash in the shower in sequence. Each fountain is believed to bring different kindness.
