Brahmavihara Arama is the only Buddhist temple in Bali

Balitraveldiary.com – The Brahmavihara Arama Temple is the only Buddhist temple among the many Hindu temples in the Buleleng area. This temple was founded by Monk Girirakhito Mahatera who was the first monk of the temple. Brahmavihara Arama consists of three words: the first is “brahma” which means “great, very noble, praiseworthy, and noble”, the second is “vihara” meaning “way of life”, and the third is “arama” which means ” the place“. So literally, Brahmavihara Arama can be interpreted as a place to train oneself and forge noble or praiseworthy behaviors which include metta, karuna, mudita and upekkha.

The temple building stands in the hills and faces the sea. The location is in the village of Banjar Tegeha, which is about eighteen kilometers to the west of Singaraja or two kilometers to the south of the Singaraja-Seririt Highway. From this place, tourists can enjoy views of the North Bali Sea which stretches from east to west.

One of the impressive monuments is a large temple bell which is a donation from the country of Thailand. There are also panels that tell Buddhist stories, replicas of the Borobudur temple, and of course, Buddha statues.

This Buddhist temple stands on a height with a cool and calm feel. Many foreign and local tourists who come to this place to learn meditation because the atmosphere is very calm is suitable for meditation. Brahmavihara Arama, or better known as the Banjar Buddhist Temple, is the largest Buddhist temple in Bali. Anyone, and from any religion, may visit to meditate.

Giving the name Brahmavihara by the late Bhante Giri, as the founder of the temple, was very much in accordance with the purpose of its establishment, and for this reason, he declared it to be a place of meditation.
